The 23rd Psalm
It is well known that Faith is the opposite of fear, the 23rd Psalm is often quoted, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: For thou art with me”.
What may not be obvious, is that a honest belief in ANYTHING will produce the same effect.
For those suffering from constant depression, fear is merely the thing that fills the space that the inability to fully believe in anything creates. It is not surprising that the base of any 12 step recovery is to “find a God of your own understanding”. They don’t care what God you find, any God will do. In their case, God will not only relive fear, but a belief in God can allow you to overcome any addiction.
For who cannot believe in God, close to the same effect can be achieved if they can find anything that they can believe in.
If we don’t believe in something, fear will fill the void.
