Fear Will Never Go Way

After months of meditating on it, I have concluded that fear will never go away. It will always show up, somehow.

Fear is an emotion, and like all emotions it passes. The challenge is to not make decisions based on these fears because these decisions are usually unwise and are only explainable if “I did it because I was afraid” is used as a justification.

The thing we fear the most is anything that threatens our ego. Our ego is our sense of ourselves. We fear anything that threatens this, because if we lose our sense of ourselves, what remains?

The solution to this dilemma is to practice humility. Humility is a “…modest opinion or estimate of one's own importance”. If we do not resist the truth of who we actually are, we don’t need to fight to constantly defend it. We don’t have to fear what we accept.

Acceptance In All Things

In regards to all fears other than fears directly related to ego (however, the underlying fear to all fears points to the ego), our only option is to walk through the fear. We have two options to overcome any fear:

  • Wait until the thing we fear passes
  • Have the thing we fear replaced by a greater fear

In each case we are accepting the fear. We can do this because we are willing to be humble.

Worry Is Resistance

We can now see that that suffering, caused by worry and fear, is a result of our resistance to accepting what is currently happening in our life or that we predict will happen in our life (when we worry about something in the past it is always about how this past thing will affect something in the future).

We always have a choice to stop resisting and to accept. Why would we continue to resist when we know that this is the cause of our suffering? We continue to be defiant and resist because the damage to our ego is the greatest fear. Most people would rather die than to live in shame.

We can’t just wait for the fear to pass because fear of damage to our ego is always a right now issue or concern.

Humility Is The Answer

Humility is also something that we practice right now. It is always available for us. It is, by definition, the practice that will relieve us of all fears to our ego. However, it only works, right now.

When the emotion of fear materializes in the future, we will again have to practice humility to realize its power to relive our worry and suffering.
